Ni hao everyone, in this blog I want to share my opinion about one of the top games of 2024. She will definitely get the title games of the year, although there are not many competitors. For my taste, among the interesting projects I would highlight: Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden (I recommend checking out my blog), remake of Quiet Hill 2, dragons dogma 2 . Now let’s move on to my review opinion.

I’ll be honest, I’m not familiar with Chinese folklore. All I know about China are films with Jackie Chan and kung fu. By the way, with Jackie Chan, perhaps you remember such a film "Forbidden Kingdom". There was a chosen one in him who could awaken the king of the monkeys. First impression

After playing it, I realized that this is not entirely true. From this genre there is only analogue of bonfires, which replenishes local estus and resurrects enemies, as well as quest presentation style (maybe they outsourced Miyazaki).

Narration

I think it’s not news to anyone that all games close to the soulslike style copy not only the basic mechanics, but also the narrative style. The plot and quests are presented much like in Miyazaki’s games. We receive grains of information, which we then have to assemble into a single picture. Let me give you an example of one quest. I had to bring the character an item three times that he described as “something to sober up”. To be honest, I don’t know exactly how I found these items, they miraculously ended up in my inventory due to a thorough study of every corner. And after I made the delivery, the character said that he was leaving, it seems, to the north and we would meet him again there. How to understand where is north in a game where there is no compass or map? But the meeting took place nevertheless, from there he again said something mysterious and I thought that he went to the only place in my head where there was a closed door, it turned out that I guessed his train of thoughts.

But there is an interesting twist in the story – stories in anime form. To be honest, I’m not a fan of this genre, but I looked quite carefully inside the game. This approach reminded me of the games Remedy, where part of the plot, the history of the world, is presented through video presentations, stories on the radio, and in one game even through a full-fledged series.

Gameplay

The game is corridor adventure with various secrets (in fact, there are so many secrets here that even to open the hub you need to complete a hidden quest already in the third chapter). We will not have a map at our disposal, but there will be various forks, shortcuts, hidden places that we will have to explore to get an interesting reward. I began to notice that games that have a map are less immersive in the world of the game. I remember playing dark souls 2 and trying to remember every element in a location, and when there was a meeting with a difficult enemy, my head began to analyze where else I could go, in which area I left one of the paths for exploration.

How to play it

The style of the game is most reminiscent of slashers. In total, the game gives you a choice of 4 fighting styles, you can choose one (as I did, I fought first the whole game, of course I tried others, but I liked the original one the most), or you can combine them as a true favorite. By the way, to enhance your martial arts skills, the game gives very flexible pumping system, everything improves, skills, skills for spells, healing bottles, components for bottles. Points for leveling up are obtained in two ways: farm mobs, or you sit at special points meditation. There is no penalty system for death.
